Burkina Faso Military Junta Makes Slight Repositioning in the Government
Captain Ibrahim Traoré, the president of the transition in Burkina Faso, recently made changes to his government, specifically in the position of the head of diplomacy. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Olivia Rouamba, who has been in office since March 2022 before Captain Traoré assumed power, has been replaced by Karamoko Jean-Marie Traoré, who previously held the role of Regional cooperation.
The reshuffle was implemented through a presidential decree, and no specific explanation was provided for these changes.
The government also made changes to other portfolios. Jacques Sosthène Dingara has been appointed as the secretary general of the government at National Education. Yacouba Zabré Gouba has replaced Simon-Pierre Boussim in the Mines portfolio. Jean-Emmanuel Ouédraogo, the Minister of Communication and government spokesperson, has been promoted to the rank of Minister of State.
The country also modified its mining code to allocate part of the mining taxes for security and development in regions affected by jihadist attacks. The key positions in the transitional government formed in October 2022 remain unchanged, including Defense, Finance, and Security.
Burkina Faso has been facing jihadist violence since 2015, resulting in over 17,000 civilian and military deaths in the past seven years. The violence has also led to the displacement of more than two million people within the country.
