Vice President Kashim Shettima on Wednesday, October 18 met with China's President, Xi Jinping in Beijing. The meeting took place during the ongoing Third Belt and Road Forum.

In the meeting, President Xi Jinping stated that China is ready to finance and complete some railway projects in Nigeria.

Shettima, representing the Nigerian president, Bola Tinubu said the request of the president has prompted the People's Republic of China to express willingness to finance and finalize the Abuja-Kano and Port-Harcourt-Maiduguri railway projects.

According to a statement from Stanley Nkwocha, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications, he stated that funds for the Abuja-Kano and Port-Harcourt-Maiduguri railway projects in Nigeria have not been released by China.

The projects were launched with an agreement for China to provide 85% financing, while Nigeria was responsible for the remaining 15%. Nigeria has fulfilled its financial obligations since the beginning of the project. However, China's funding has been delayed due to cutbacks and other commitments.

The China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation has been designated as the contractors responsible for carrying out the crucial infrastructure project, which is commonly referred to as a legacy project.

Additionally, the Chinese President has promised to enhance investments in Nigeria's power generation and digital economy. Furthermore, he has requested the safeguarding of Chinese citizens employed in Nigeria.

Shettima, who conveyed Tinubu's greetings, characterized the railway initiatives as crucial for both the Nigerian President and its citizens. He emphasized that these projects are a lasting endeavor that will enhance the country's economy, generate employment opportunities, and promote trade and investments throughout the nation.

According to him, President Tinubu firmly upholds a stronger relationship between Nigeria and China, based on respect, devoid of political interference, and fostering mutual international cooperation.

President Jinping also pledged to maintain strict measures against terrorists in the security sector. The statement emphasized China's dedication to promoting peace in the Sahel region. Additionally, it emphasized the importance of China's established military training and joint exercise agreements, highlighting their unwavering significance.
