Gambian Soldier, Sanna Fadera Jailed For Unsuccessful Coup Against President Barrow
A Gambian court on Tuesday, October 31, sentenced Sanna Fadera to 12 years imprisonment for leading an unsuccessful coup in 2022 against the administration of President Barrow.
In January, 2023, eight soldiers were charged with conspiracy and treason for the roles they played in the December 21, 2022 foiled coup.
Also, two civilians and a police officer were also accused of conspiracy and treason. About seven accused which included the police and the civilians were acquitted and released while the trial was still underway.
Three other soldiers were also acquitted and Sanni Fadera who is considered to be the ringleader was found guilty of treason.
Sanni Fadera has denied all of the charges leveled against him and he has 30 days to appeal the verdict.
Coup attempts are not strange occurrences in Gambia. Former president Yahya Jammeh seized power in a 1994 coupband foiled several attempts to remove him before losing elections to Barrow in late 2016.
