Kenya's Director General of Communications Authority Resigns Amid Corruption Allegations
Ezra Chiloba, the Director General of the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA), has submitted his resignation in the midst of allegations of corruption and abuse of office.
According to reports, his letter has been accepted, and an investigation committee has been launched to investigate the case.
Chiloba, having been appointed Director General in October 2021, has served for two years. However, he was recently suspended indefinitely by Kenya's ICT Agency in mid-September following allegations of misappropriating usage of approximately KES25 million in staff mortgage funds, resulting in significant financial losses for the communications regulator.
The investigation, which was carried out by the Special Board Audit and Risk Committee, uncovered significant financial irregularities within the organization.
Among the findings was that Chiloba had exceeded the one-acre limit set by the Civil Servants Housing by purchasing a house and seven acres of land, which he acknowledged by being the buyer and his father by being the seller.
Chiloba's suspension led to his replacement by Christopher Wambua, who will now serve in full capacity after his resignation, marking an early end to Chiloba's tenure of just two years.
The situation also involved the suspension of other high-ranking officials, including the Human Resources, Legal Services, Internal Auditor, and Finance directors, as they were allegedly involved in the financial mismanagement that resulted in significant losses for the CA.
