The European Union has introduced measures to place sanctions on individuals and entities linked to the Nigerien  military junta, a significant move made three months after they took control through a coup.

The EU Council unveiled plans to create a framework that grants them the authority to implement sanctions on those responsible for actions that endanger Niger's peace, stability, and security.

This pivotal action occurred three months after the military junta gained power through a coup and various sanctions, such as travel bans, asset freezes, and restrictions on funding for those who are sanctioned. The European Union also stated that it would grant exceptions for humanitarian purposes when implementing freezing measures on assets.

EU Foreign Policy Chief Josep Borrell expressed support for Ecowas and warned that military coups have consequences. The EU's decision demonstrates its commitment to ECOWAS and its determination to deter military coups. This action by the EU follows ECOWAS' sanctions on Niger and the United States government's suspension of aid.

Niger's security cooperation and financial aid from the EU have been halted due to the military coup.
