Russia Officials Visit Niger to Strengthen Ties

A delegation from Russia headed by Deputy Defense Minister Colonel-General Yunus-Bek Yevkurov, held a meeting with military leaders in Niamey on Monday, December 4. This was revealed by the Nigerien authorities on national radio.

This visit marks the first official visit by a Russian government member since the coup in Niger on July 26, when the army ousted the civilian government, resulting in international condemnation.

The talks between the delegation led by Yevkurov and Niger's military government, headed by General Abdourahamane Tiani, resulted in the signing of documents to enhance military cooperation between Niger and Russia, as per Nigerien authorities.

After experiencing strained relations with France due to a coup in July, Russia's diplomatic standing in Niger has become advantageous.

A Russian delegation on Sunday, December 3 met with military leaders in Mali, a key ally of Moscow in the area.

During the discussions, Alousséni Sanou, the Minister of Economy and Finance of Mali, highlighted the focus on various development projects. These projects included renewable energy, nuclear energy, and the provision of fertilizer, wheat, and petroleum products. Sanou also mentioned the plans for building a railway and a tram network, establishing a regional airline, and undertaking research and mining projects.

The military governments of Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso,  heavily impacted by terrorist activities, have recently united to create the Alliance of Sahel States. Their relationships with France are extremely strained.
