UDA Implements Leadership Changes in Nairobi County Assembly
The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party has announced significant leadership changes within the Nairobi County Assembly. In a letter issued by UDA Secretary General Cleophas Malala, the party communicated the new leadership appointments for the Assembly's speaker.
Malala stated that these changes were prompted by the resolution of the minority members of the County Assembly, who met on October 17, 2023.
"In the said meeting, it was resolved that the Minority Leader and the Minority Whip be removed for reasons contained in the referenced minutes," Malala noted in a letter addressed to the speaker on October 23, 2023.
"We enclose herewith copies of the said minutes and the signed attendance record of the Honourable members."
The leadership changes include the appointment of Nairobi South Ward MCA Waithera Chege as the new Minority Leader, replacing Antony Kiragu, who was removed from the position while Deonysias Mwangi, the Guthurai MCA, will serve as Waithera's deputy.
Additionally, Umoja One MCA Mark Mugambi has been replaced by Nominated MCA Joyce Muthoni as the Minority Whip, with Clay MCA Samora Mwaura as the deputy.
These leadership changes come after several months of tension and disputes over the Assembly's leadership which reveal that at least 35 MCAs from the UDA party signed a petition in support of the removal of MCA Kiragu and MCA Mugambi from their leadership positions.
