Kenyan President, William Kimchirchir Ruto recently reshuffled his cabinet stating that the change is needed to optimize performance and enhance delivery.

President Ruto, who is currently serving as the fifth Kenyan president, assumed office on September 13, 2022, following the announcement of Kenya’s electoral commission as the winner of the election polls held on August 9, 2022.

The cabinet changes are aimed at restructuring of various ministries to enhance and optimize their deliveries.

One of the reshuffles of the cabinet is the expansion of the Office of the Prime Cabinet Secretary, led by Musalia Mudavadi, to include the Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, previously overseen by Alfred Mutua.

As part of the reshuffle, Alfred Mutua has been reassigned to head the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife, previously known as the Ministry of Tourism and Heritage.

In addition, the reshuffle affected Moses Kuria, the Cabinet Secretary for Investments, Trade, and Industry, who has been moved to lead the Ministry of Public Service, Performance, and Delivery Management, formerly known as the Ministry of Public Service, Gender, and Affirmative Action.

Kuria recently made headlines with comments about expected fuel price increases, which drew criticism from Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Other Cabinet Secretaries affected by the reshuffle include Alice Wahome, Rebecca Miano, Zacharia Njeru, Peninah Malonza, and Aisha Jumwa.

The changes have prompted reactions from various stakeholders and the broader political community. Some of the reshuffled Cabinet Secretaries had faced accusations of underperformance in recent times.
