Tanzanian Government Urges Accuracy and Patriotism in Digital Content Amidst Technological Growth
As technological advancements expand digital spaces for freedom of expression, users are being encouraged to prioritize accuracy and patriotism when sharing or discussing information on social media platforms.
Mr Mobhare Matinyi, the government's Chief Spokesperson and Director of Information Services made the call at a 'Stories for Change' award gala held in Dar es Salaam, a city in Tanzania. He emphasized that in the sixth phase, the government remains committed to addressing various concerns raised by citizens through digital channels.
Matinyi commended JamiiForums, a social enterprise that advocates and promotes civil and Digital Rights, social justice, accountability, democracy, and good governance, for their innovative efforts to create more opportunities for freedom of expression. He noted that the Stories for Change initiative by Jamii Forums aligns with Tanzania's 10-year plan for the National Digital Economy Framework 2023-2033.
The chief spokesperson highlighted the presence of the Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB) at the event as a symbol of the government's readiness to engage with citizens and civil society organizations in the fight against corruption, a significant challenge facing the country.
“The presence of the Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB) at this event is an indication of the government’s readiness to engage the Wananchi group and the civil society organizations in the fight against corruption, one of the enemies we are currently facing.”
Matunyi, who recently assumed his new role as the government spokesperson, acknowledged that citizens often lack sufficient information about government activities and pledged to bridge this information gap while ensuring that their voices are heard and acted upon by the state.
