Update: Joseph Boakai Officially Declared Winner of Liberia's Election, Electoral Commission Reveals
On Monday, November 20 Davidetta Lansanah, Liberia's National Electoral Commission (NEC) president declared Joseph Boakai winner of the presidential election.
Boakai was declared the winner with a 0.28% lead, capturing 50.64% of the votes compared to Weah's 49.36 percent.
The victory margin for Boakai was 20,567 votes. Weah, on the other hand, had already accepted his defeat on Friday based on the almost complete polling station results of 99.98%.
Nonetheless, the commission received two appeals from Weah's party concerning the election process in Nimba County.
The commission now has a 30-day period to investigate the matter and make a decision.
Mr. Boakai official commencement will be in January 2024, at the time of his inauguration. Critics have dubbed him "Sleepy Joe" due to reports of him dozing off during official events.
However, Mr. Boakai is determined to revive hope in Liberia and safeguard the nation from any potential crises. With his experience as vice-president under the first elected female African head of state (2006-2018), Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, he is well-acquainted with the responsibilities of leading a country.
