Update: Presidential Run-off to take Place between Weah and Boakai
The Liberian Election Commission on Tuesday, October 24, set a date for the presidential run-off to hold in November, 2023.
The final results showed that neither President George Weah nor opposition leader Joseph Boakai received enough votes which is 50% to secure a clear victory.
Weah currently leads with 43.83% of the vote, while Boakai follows closely behind with 43.44% from the tally of results from all polling stations in Liberia.
According to the chairperson of the commission, Davidetta Browne Lansanah, the run-off vote is scheduled for November 14th. He also mentioned that there was a high voter turnout of approximately 78.86% out of the 2.4 million registered voters as compared to the previous elections in the country.
In the 2017 election, the two politicians competed against each other, with Weah emerging as the winner in the second round, securing 60% of the vote. This election marked an important milestone for the West African nation, as it was the first peaceful transition of power since the devastating civil wars that took place from 1989 to 2003, resulting in the loss of around 250,000 lives.
Weah‘s victory was met with high expectations, as he had promised to address poverty and improve infrastructure. He expressed his ambition of transforming Liberia from a low-income country into a middle-income one.
