Zimbabwe's Opposition Party Announces Nationwide Protests Over Recalls
Zimbabwe's opposition party, Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) in Zimbabwe has declared its intention to initiate a series of nationwide protests in response to the recall of its Members of Parliament (MPs) and councilors. This move follows a recent attempt by CCC members to challenge the legitimacy of these recalls, which they view as politically motivated actions aimed at undermining their presence in the political arena.
Sengezo Tshabangu, a CCC member claiming to be the party's interim secretary-general, initiated these recalls, asserting that the MPs and councillors in question were no longer affiliated with the CCC. The CCC leadership, led by Nelson Chamisa, has accused Tshabangu of having links to the ruling party, Zanu PF, suggesting a broader political agenda in which the recalls may benefit the incumbent government.
The opposition party's decision to protest across the country is a direct response to what they perceive as unfair targeting and attempts to suppress their influence. This includes boycotting Parliament and council activities, further raising tensions in the already politically charged environment.
The CCC has also pursued legal action by approaching the High Court to challenge the recalls. High Court judge Justice Munamato Mutevedzi has set a hearing date for November 2, providing a legal avenue to address the ongoing dispute and recall-related issues.
