ZMF President, Henrietta Rushwaya, Convicted for Attempted Gold Smuggling
In a legal development, Henrietta Rushwaya, the President of the Zimbabwe Miners Federation (ZMF), has been convicted for her involvement in an attempt to smuggle six kilograms of gold out of Zimbabwe through the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport in 2020.
The High Court Judge Justice Pisirayi Kwenda issued the conviction following a comprehensive trial, leading to Rushwaya's remand in custody until November 10, 2023, when sentencing is expected.
The case against Rushwaya surrounds her alleged involvement in attempting to smuggle gold valued at US$333,042.28 out of Zimbabwe on October 20, 2020.
Her conviction was reported to have carried legal consequences and also emphasises the importance of upholding the rule of law and safeguarding the country's natural resources.
